Arrival & living in Mexico City

Flights & arrival

Getting to Mexico City

Flights & your first 48 hours

MEX and NLU are separate airports, not two terminals of one airport. Check the code on every flight segment; do not treat a change between airports as a normal terminal connection.

Airport links checked 2026-09-09. Flight times and delays are not displayed here. Confirm your flight, terminal and check-in deadline with the operating airline; external boards may be delayed or unavailable.

From the airport to your accommodation

Choose ground transport for the airport on your ticket and the neighborhood of your lodging. AIFA publishes its own city and metropolitan connections. At MEX, confirm the terminal with your airline before arranging pickup.

Before paying, confirm the total, pickup location, luggage space, any accessibility needs and the cancellation or flight-delay policy. A published route does not guarantee a seat or late-night availability.

Your first 48 hours in Mexico City
  1. Arrival evening: settle in

Keep the first journey to your accommodation straightforward. Check the correct airport and terminal again before sharing a pickup location with a driver or friend.

  2. First morning: find your bearings

Explore one neighborhood rather than crossing the city repeatedly. Save your lodging and a nearby landmark as separate map pins for an easy return.

  3. Next day: make one local plan

Choose either a Chapultepec museum outing or a historic-center outing. The anthropology and popular-art museums make different starting points; do not assume you can comfortably combine both on arrival day.

    Explore the sourced local shortlist

Keep your accommodation address and an offline map handy. Check your phone's roaming or SIM options before relying on mobile data, and identify a nearby bank ATM and grocery store once settled.

Picking someone up?
  • Confirm the airport code, operating airline, flight number and local arrival date.
  • Check the airline's flight status before leaving and confirm the terminal again.
  • Agree on a named meeting point and a fallback contact method.
  • Wait for the traveller's message after baggage collection; landing time is not curbside pickup time.
Getting around & everyday essentials

Everyday Mexico City

Getting around & local questions

Use the official integrated transport network to plan a trip by neighborhood. Check the operator for the actual service, accepted payment and disruptions. Allow separately for walking and transfers rather than treating every journey as a direct ride.

Mexico City: integrated transport network Source checked 2026-09-09; confirm changes with the operator.

Should I combine both museums in one day?

The Anthropology Museum and the Museum of Popular Art anchor different outings: Chapultepec and the historic center. Pick one area first, then add another only if the journey and remaining time suit you.

View the places and their sources
What should I confirm before taking a local ride?

Ask about the fare, cash or card payment, the destination stop, luggage and the last return service. For a taxi or private transfer, agree on the total and pickup point. If you need step-free access, confirm the specific vehicle and stop, not just the operator.

01

Visitor entry

Admission length is decided at entry. Do not assume every visitor automatically receives 180 days.

02

Temporary resident

For stays longer than 180 days and generally up to four years. Apply at a Mexican consulate abroad under the route that fits you.

03

Complete the exchange

After entering Mexico with a resident visa, complete the resident-card process with INM within the required timeframe.

04

Verify locally

Financial thresholds, appointments and documents vary. Use the specific consulate’s current checklist before applying.

One good plan in Mexico City

Group a museum visit and an evening performance by neighborhood. Confirm tickets and allow time for the journey between them.

Before you commit

Confirm times, admission and availability with the organizer. Each dated selection includes its source and the details still worth checking.
